Leica Geosystems Introduces Low-Cost Handheld Laser Distance Measuring Tool

Feb. 11, 2002 — Leica Geosystems today announced the introduction of DISTO Tape, a handheld laser measuring tool that retails for under $400.

The DISTO Tape products are being sold through the 700 Lowe’s building supply stores nationwide. [an error occurred while processing this directive] DISTO Tape is a lightweight handheld device that uses visible laser beams to make fast, easy measurements of distance, area and volume, with 1/8-inch (3-mm) accuracy, at ranges up to 300 feet (100 meters), indoors or outdoors. One person can capture hundreds of measurements in a matter of minutes with simple point-and-click operation.

"If you can see it, you can measure it, even if it’s in a location that cannot be reached with a traditional steel tape," said Jack Wolf, vice president, consumer products, for Leica Geosystems. "Operation is very simple. You point the red laser dot at what you want to measure, then push a button. In less than a second, you get an accurate distance measurement."
